Flu Vaccines
Each year there is a different strain of the flu virus in the comunity and each year a new vaccine is mass produced. As soon as the vaccine is available we begin our flu vaccination clinics which are run bu our nurses.
The following people are elligible for a influenza vaccine;
- all aged 65 years and older
- those living in residential homes and nursing homes or other long-stay facilities - rapid spread is likely to follow introduction of infection
- all those over 6 months of age in the following clinical risk groups:
- diabetics - patients requiring insulin or oral hypoglycaemic drugs
- immunocompromised - due to disease or treatment
- patients with chronic respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung fibrosis, pneumoconiosis, asthma requiring repeated or continuous use of inhaled or systemic steroids or with previous exacerbations requiring hospital admission
- patients with chronic renal disease including nephrotic syndrome, renal transplantation, chronic renal failure
- patients with chronic heart disease including chronic ischaemic heart disease, congenital heart disease and hypertensive heart disease requiring regular medication and follow-up, and chronic heart failure
- people with chronic liver disease including cirrhosis, biliary artesia, and chronic hepatitis
- people with chronic neurological disease, including stroke and TIA. people who are in receipt of a carer's allowance or
- people who are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person
- poultry workers who work in close contact with poultry
